Investing in Stronger Leadership: Winner Regional Health Board Members Pursue Continued Education
Strong healthcare organizations depend on strong leadership. At Winner Regional Health, our Board of Directors recognizes that serving our community means continually learning, growing, and staying informed about the challenges and opportunities facing rural healthcare.
Several members of the Winner Regional Health Board have participated in the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) Certified Rural Health Clinic Board Member Course, an educational opportunity designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of rural healthcare leaders.

For Board member Betsy Pravecek, the experience was both practical and valuable.
“My experience with the NRHA board member course was extremely positive,” Betsy said. “The content was practical, relevant, and clearly designed for rural healthcare leaders who are navigating challenges with limited resources.”
One of the aspects Betsy appreciated most was the course’s emphasis on real-world situations. Rather than focusing solely on theory, the training provided examples and information that could be directly applied to the work being done at Winner Regional Health.
Understanding the Role of the Board
One of Betsy’s biggest takeaways from the course was gaining a deeper understanding of the distinction between governance and management.
The training reinforced the importance of Board members focusing on strategic oversight, financial stewardship, and the long-term health of the organization, while allowing hospital leadership and staff to manage the day-to-day operations.
Betsy also found the training surrounding compliance, risk mitigation, and CEO support particularly valuable.
The course has influenced the way she approaches her responsibilities as a Board member. With a clearer framework for decision-making and accountability, Betsy said the training has encouraged her to ask better questions, critically evaluate information, and remain disciplined about the Board’s role as the governing body.
Why Continuing Education Matters
Rural healthcare continues to evolve rapidly. Hospitals face changing regulations, financial pressures, workforce challenges, technological advancements, and the ongoing need to provide high-quality care with limited resources.
For Betsy, continuing education helps Board members remain prepared to navigate those challenges.
“Healthcare is changing rapidly, and rural hospitals face pressures that require informed, proactive leadership,” she said. “Continuing education ensures that board members stay current on best practices and industry challenges.”
She also views ongoing education as more than simply professional development.
“Ultimately, ongoing learning is part of honoring the trust our community places in us.”
Investing in the Future of Winner Regional Health
Training opportunities such as the NRHA board member course are one of the ways Winner Regional Health continues to invest in effective leadership. Strong governance plays an important role in the hospital’s ability to remain financially responsible, strategically focused, and committed to providing high-quality healthcare for the communities it serves.
“Courses like this are one of the ways we invest in being better leaders for Winner Regional,” Betsy said. “The training emphasizes that strong governance is essential to sustaining high-quality care at Winner Regional, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue developing the skills needed to serve effectively.”
At Winner Regional Health, our commitment to education extends beyond our clinical teams. By encouraging our Board members to continually develop their knowledge and leadership skills, we strengthen the foundation that supports our organization and, ultimately, the patients and communities we serve.
