November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

Jill McMurtrey, RN at Winner Regional Health, is especially passionate about Pancreatic Cancer Awareness and Prevention. Here is her story, and why she wears purple:

"I have been involved in advocating for pancreatic cancer awareness since 2016, when my mom passed away from this disease, just 6 months after she was diagnosed. Pancreatic cancer is still considered fairly rare, but has one on the highest mortality rates of any cancer, which is why I think it is so important for people to be aware of the signs and symptoms, and to take steps to lower their cancer risk.

My family and I have been advocating and fundraising in various ways since then, both to honor mom, and to help change to course of this disease. This year, I decided to fundraise by training for and running a marathon with Project Purple! When you find something that you are passionate about, and your efforts not only help others, but improve your own physical and mental health, it's a win-win!

There are a lot of great resources out there to learn more about pancreatic cancer, ways to get involved, assessing your own risk, and what to do if you or a loved one are diagnosed. As an advocate, I'd be happy to help point people in the right direction, and offer my support as much as possible."
